IRS Says Smart Grid Investment Grants Under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Program Non-Taxable

The Internal Revenue Service March 10 issued Revenue Procedure 2010-20 providing safe harbor treatment under tax code Section 118(a) for firms receiving grants for smart grid investment.
“With the determination that Smart Grid Investment Grants to corporations are non-taxable, corporate utilities will be able to launch their investments with a clear indication of the tax status for their projects,” the Treasury Department and the Department of Energy said in a joint news release announcing the revenue procedure.
