California Lawmakers Approve Data Breach Notification to Attorney General, Information Requirements for Notices

Lawmakers Aug. 18 sent to the governor’s desk a bill (S.B. 1166) that would require entities notifying state residents of a data breach to send an electronic copy to the California Attorney General if more than 500 Californians are affected.

The bill, which was introduced by Sen. Joe Simitian (D), also specifies the information that must be included in notifications that businesses and government agencies send to state residents when a data breach compromises their personal information.
